Project Description

The Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) enables anesthesiologists to excel in patient care through research, education and advocacy. In conjunction with the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (CJA), CAS has provided educational articles and case studies with corresponding assessments, which learners complete for continuing professional development (CPD) credits.

However, CAS found its current online learning platform difficult to maintain and use. There were also many time-consuming, manual processes, including manual verification of non-members and double login to the education portal from CAS’s website. Completion certificates also had to be printed and then mailed to learners, resulting in complaints from members and unnecessary expense to the association.

To overcome these challenges, CAS began researching alternative solutions. The new platform needed to be easy to use, enable member and non-member access, include hands-free administration and integrate with the group’s association management system (AMS), iMIS. Additionally, CAS needed a multi-lingual system with eCommerce capabilities.

CAS found just the system they were looking for when they discovered Digitec’s Knowledge Direct® learning management system (LMS). The multi-lingual platform provides CAS’s English and French speaking members, as well as non-members, with improved access to CPD modules. Integration with the iMIS AMS enables single sign-on and automatic learner registration. From the learner dashboard, members are able to browse the course catalog; purchase CPD, maintenance of certification (MOC), and self-assessment courses; complete their course assignments and launch their print ready certificate.

For the first time, CAS has total control over their eLearning portal. Non-technical staff can create course content and assessments, monitor participation, run reports, review module evaluation feedback and modify module content from within the LMS.

The Knowledge Direct Message Center also opens the doors of communication between members, CAS staff, and course instructors like never before. Now, members can send comments and questions from within the learning portal and be notified when a response has been received. CAS’s LMS administrator can also manage and reply to messages quickly and easily from the admin dashboard – ensuring that all communications are safely stored and archived for easy reference later.
